To Continue The Dorky Theme

I've been watching a little original Star Trek. On Friday I watched the original, discarded pilot episode for TOS, called "The Cage," which features a crew made up of Spock, one captain Christopher Pike, Gene Roddenberry's wife as first officer, and a whole heck of a lot of people we've never heard of. Also, it was partly in black and white, which was weird. Apparently it was dismissed as "too cerebral," so Roddenberry got sent back to try again.

Then tonight I watched a later first season episode called Charlie X, which in many ways is your typical adolescent with mysterious psychic powers turned monster-of-the-week, but had a few things going for it:
(1) said adolescent is rather cute
(2) a gratuitous musical interlude occurs in the mess hall when Spock is strumming a musical Vulcan harp-thing and Uhara breaks into a jazzy number ("Oh, on the Starship Enterprise / there's someone who's in Satan's guise / whose devil ears and devil eyes / could rip your heart from you. . .").
(3) For no particular reason, a holodeck program involves acrobatic tumblers.
(4) while taking control of the ship, our upstart young anti-hero forces Spock into some kind of poetic Tourette's syndrome, leading to statements like "Captain! There is a tiger tiger burning bright in the forest of the night!"
